DERES v WELLING - CENTENARY CELEBRATION DAY
Posted by Brian Spurrell on 29 August 2022
So today is the big day we’ve been looking forward to for a while – the celebration of the centenary of Erith and Belvedere FC. It was 100 years ago last Friday, 26 August 1922, that the Deres (newly renamed having operated for four years as Belvedere and District FC) hosted Chatham Town at the Park View ground alongside Belvedere rail station where we were to play until 1999. As featured elsewhere in the programme, Chatham spoiled the party a bit by winning 3-1. Deres scored a last-minute consolation through Dick Risby, who has a whole collection of “firsts”: our first goalscorer, the first player to make his last appearance and score his last goal for the Deres, and the first ex-Dere to play against us when he turned out for Sheppey a fortnight later!
For the occasion, we’ve invited a host of former players along, we’ve got some entertainment laid on for the family, and there’s a live singer later in the afternoon, so we hope everyone enjoys the day. Plus of course it’s the official launch day for the Deres’ centenary history “A Century of Deres”, which will be on sale outside the clubhouse and inside after the match.
