DERES SUBS SURFACE FOR LATE SHOW
Two goals from substitutes earned the points for Erith & Belvedere as they rebounded from three defeats in a week against the top three in the SCEFL to overtake a team that had nudged ahead of them in the league from more games. But until the late strike it began to look like Deres were losing ground in even the race for fourth.
Deres gave a second debut to Ryan Flack, who had played for them in the calamitous Ryman North season of 2014-15, and whose career since had included a Wembley appearance for Cray Valley PM in the 2019 FA Vase final. Also new to the Deres’ season was 18-year-old James Dyer, a new signing from Phoenix Sports, who made an early sub appearance coming on for the injured Reece Barrett in the 36th minute.
After an otherwise dull first half, Dyer struck early in the second half when a loose ball came his way outside the box and he placed a left-foot screamer past Nathan Edwards in the Dale goal to put Deres one up after 51 minutes. Eight minutes later Danny Lear lobbed the keeper but hit the bar as Deres threatened to put the game beyond Dale’s reach.
Fifteen minutes from time, however, Holmesdale were level when Cian McCarthy pounced on a chance in the box.
However it was the Deres who snatched the points when a scramble resulted in a loose ball reaching Drew Allassani on the left, who made no mistake and gave the Deres a boost going into a sequence of away games.
