After extra time

(Report by Mark Doig of Kent Sports News)

In a sometimes feisty encounter, Erith and Belvedere claimed an F.A. Cup replay scalp by defeating Tooting and Mitcham.

The two teams could not be separated in a one all draw at Tooting on Saturday and they cancelled each other out again in 90 minutes of the replay before the Deres scored twice in extra time to progress.

Chances were few and far between in the first half. Morgan Campbell had to be alert to make a good save from a deflected Henry Dasofunjo free kick but was then relieved when his hurried clearance struck his own centre back and looped back towards goal where it clipped the bar on the way over.

After the interval Ollie Bate turned and shot just wide for the Deres before Tooting came close when Michael Dixon’s cross came back out off the crossbar.

Tom McNamee thought that he put the hosts ahead but Campbell made a spectacular save to turn it over. However, the escape for Tooting was short lived when the corner came in and Tyler Anderson-Parr crashed home a close range header to put Deres ahead after 51 minutes.

Ahkeem Belford kept the visitors in the game with a brilliant block to thwart Samuel Ogunseye before Erith again came close when Campbell struggled with another Dasofunjo free kick but Rob Curtis was unable to keep his follow up under the bar.

Daniel Williams was brought on by the visitors and it was he who levelled on 68 minutes. He found himself in space and although Rilwan Anibaba did well to get his hand to his angled drive, he was unable to stop it from going in at the far post.

He almost made it two when Andrew Sesay sent him through but his shot came back off the base of the post. An even greater Tooting chance came and went soon after when Richards brought down Andre Thompson-Fearow in the penalty area. Jake Rose stepped up but blasted the spot kick over the bar.

Through the latter stages, tension between the two teams simmered and it finally boiled over after the full time whistle when the two teams started to prepare for extra time. Players, substitutes and coaching staff from both teams got involved in a massive scuffle ending with a red card shown to Erith manager Danny Murphy, and a yellow to one of the Tooting management team.

Erith had the better of the start of the extra thirty minutes but the goal that put them ahead had a degree of good fortune.  In the 103rd minute Anderson-Parr slung in a cross from the right wing and it deceived Campbell who wrapped himself around the post in his desperate and unsuccessful attempt to keep it out.

Anibaba was not tested again and with three minutes remaining, the Deres made the game safe when substitute Nassim Dukali, barely a minute after coming on for Dasofunjo, showed great composure in placing his shot just inside the post.
