RILWAN COMES UP TRUMPS
Rilwan Anibaba was the hero of this London Senior Cup tie as he saved four penalties in the longest penalty shootout in the Deres’ history.
The match was a massive contrast to the previous encounters between the clubs. Their first encounter at Foxbury took place on the hottest August Bank Holiday on record, whereas this was played in the chill and mist of a cold autumn night. Their recent league meeting at Park View Road was a bonkers game that finished 5-3 to the visitors, whereas this was a dramatic and tense tie that ended goalless after 90 minutes.
There could have been a penalty as early as the eighth minute when Lee Lewis was brought down in the box but the referee waved play on. Drew Allassani’s turn and shot on 27 minutes was fairly easy for Kamurasi, while at the other end Anibaba saved well from Philpot as Glebe shaded the first half.
Midway through the second half Glebe piled on the pressure, Brad Wilson rolling a shot wide and Kalvin Morath-Gibbs netting only to be pulled back for offside. Nine minutes from time the league’s top scorer Jamie Philpot was through one-on-one with Anibaba, but the Deres’ keeper stood his ground and won out.
In the time remaining Deres had a couple of chances, good work from Ashley Carew setting up Lewis for what was a poor shot, and Danny Lear breaking clear but overrunning the ball slightly and allowing Kamurasi to block. Soon afterwards the final whistle sent the tie to penalties.
The penalties went as follows:
1 Penny saved Sprosen missed 0-0
2 Lawrence scored Carew scored 1-1
3 Baugh scored Cray saved 2-1
4 Wilson saved Dasofunjo scored 2-2
5 Philpot scored McNamee scored 3-3
6 Shoderu scored Anibaba scored 4-4
7 Morath-Gibbs scored Lear scored 5-5
8 Parsons scored Brand scored 6-6
9 Olorunnisomo scored Richards scored 7-7
10 Johnson saved Allassani missed 7-7
11 Kamurasi saved Lewis scored 7-8
Deres supporters despaired when Louis Sprosen’s opening kick went high over the bar, but Anibaba saved two of the first five as the regulation shootout ended 3-3. Anibaba himself took the first penalty in sudden-death for Deres, and confidently beat Kamurasi. With the tenth kick a save from Sam Johnson put Deres on the verge of a win, but Drew Allassani missed. So to the final pair of kicks: Kamurasi, who had been trying to psyche out most of the Deres players, saw his penalty saved by Anibaba, and Lee Lewis tucked his shot away to send the Deres through.
