Ken Tubby
Posted by Brian Spurrell on 24 May 2020
We've only just learned of the passing, on 25 June 2019, of former Erith and Belvedere winger Ken Tubby.
Ken was a fixture on the left wing in 1956-57, debuting in a 4-1 home defeat to Grays Athletic on 30 August 1956. He made 32 appearances and contributed 11 goals despite the difficulty of getting away from National Service and a recurrent ankle injury late in the season. In summer 1956 he married Kent County netball player Sheila Hyland and joined the Royal Army Service Corps as a driver. He was posted overseas and played what looked like his last game for Deres at Wembley FC in September 1957. By mid-November word reached Erith that he had scored three hat-tricks in five games in Nicosia, the first of a batch of Deres who made an impact in Cyprus! Ken returned in May 1959 for a Past v Present game and had one last first-team appearance at Dagenham on 3 September 1959 before joining Charlie Fuller at Slade Green. For many years he lived on Sutherland Road, a goal kick away from our old ground.
Our thanks to Ken's daughter Alison Brett for the information, and belated sympathies to his family.
