The Opposing View – Erith & Belvedere vs Lordswood FC, SCEFL Premier, 18 February 2023
with Matt Barman, Lordswood FC Manager
Nik: Could you give me a summary of your first month in charge of Lordswood FC?
Matt Barman: As with any outsourced appointment, it’s a case of us all getting to know each other. The squad has seen some changes in personal with plenty of young players coming in.
Nik: How have you gone about introducing new ideas to the team and what have you seen that you like in the old setup?
Matt Barman: There was plenty to like in the old squad and the hope is that the new lads will compliment what is already here. The system played is not too far dissimilar to the way myself and Dan want to play, so it’s more about tweaks than wholesale changes
Nik: You had a good win at home to Whitstable Town in your last match. Do you feel that this result and performance stands you in good stead for the match against Erith & Belvedere?
Matt Barman: We must stay grounded, our journey is just beginning. We were very good against Erith Town for long periods, but then let ourselves down a few days later against Welling Town, prior to the Whitstable game. The games we have done well, we worked hard, it’s simple as that. We have a really young squad on the whole, albeit with a few older heads. We must compensate a lack of experience with energy, desire and a willingness to learn.
Nik: What do you know already about Erith & Belvedere?
Matt Barman: That they look like they are going to be more than deserved champions. I’m sure no one at the club is saying that just yet or taking things for granted, but there’s just too much quality for that not to happen. Whilst leagues are generally marathons, they’ve sprinted to the line from day one.
Nik: What are your thoughts on Saturday's match against Erith & Belvedere?
Matt Barman: It will be tough of course, but we must accept the challenge. This is what you play football for, the big games, the challenges both individually and collectively. We must be prepared to roll our sleeves up and be brave in possession.
Nik: What are your hopes for the rest of Lordswood's season?
Matt Barman: We have some serious amounts of work to be done to be safe, that is important to us. However, for the bigger picture and if we are to take steps forward as a club, we need to develop our young squad, ensure roles and responsibilities are known and create muscle memory of winning and how to fight for each other as a team.
Nik: Many thanks for your time Matt. See you on Saturday!
