BAD NIGHT AT THE OFFICE AS DERES GO OUT
The Deres’ six-game unbeaten run came to an end along with their FA Vase hopes when they were soundly beaten by the leaders of the Combined Counties Premier Division North.
Deres are in their 100th season, Southall their 150th, but it was the home team who had more cause for celebration. It was Anthony O’Connor who opened the scoring in the 9th minute, getting on the end of a corner and setting Deres on the back foot early on.
Erith struggled to make much impression and suffered a further setback when Rob Curtis was injured on the quarter-hour and was replaced by Reece Barrett. Six minutes later the next god chance came to Luke Heneghan, whose centre went across the face of goal but found no takers.
It was nearly half-time before the Deres threatened, crosses from Henry Dasofunjo and Ollie Bate coming to nothing and a header from Calum McGeehan drawing an easy save from Berkley Laurencin.
Whatever Marlon Patterson had to say at half-time, the message was undermined by a catastrophic start to the second half, with O’Connor adding his second goal within 40 seconds of the restart.
O’Connor could have added a third on 64 minutes, but for a fine save by Rilwan Anibaba. Yet it was Anibaba who appeared to have the last touch in the scramble that produced Southall’s third goal, as he juggled it into his own net eleven minutes from time.
A flick wide by Bate in the 89th minute was too little too late, as the Deres reflected on a bad night at the office but a defeat to a very good team.
